I assume that by "the mixer panel", you refer to the Volume Control applet in
Win9x/2k.  If so, then you need to understand that there are at least 2
different "mixers" you can access/modify: Playback and Record.  To switch
between them (and often the 3rd-party drivers-supported "Other" setting), go to
Options -> Properties.  When you're messing with the *Playback*, you need to
make sure the "Mute" checkbox is checked.  You neither want nor need to be
hearing everything your mic picks up being spit back at you in a constant
stream.  However, switch to Recording, and it's the exact opposite: check the
box (labeled "Select") to enable recording through that device.  So you get the
mic input enabled and the mike playback *disabled*, aka muted.  It's really
pretty simple, but...
