Pete,
If it offers any consolation (which I know it won't) you are not
alone - I have been running our TFC server since the very
beginning of HLDS/TFC came out and we are experiencing problems
too. I have several degrees in computer technology, so I have
done my homework on this just as you have. There IS a bug
exploit out there that crashes the server on a long playername
(YABOB - Yet Another Buffer Overflow Bug) - but if I recall, this
was only via Admin Mod. Please see adminmod.org for this
reference.
Between the cheats, the unstability and other anomalous behavior,
we also have lost a majority of our guests. I can only hope
Valve is working on some new code. It might be helpful to them
if they released their server software to a SELECT group of
beta-testers who run a DS so initial reports can assist them in
fixing erroneous problems before they plague the entire TFC
community. This would entail admins running all different
platforms and verious setups - to cover a wider scope. Ex. -
some running AM, some not. Some on Win95/98 - others W2K. Etc. -
you get the idea.
Hope you get things working.
