If you play the game, best thing to do is run the HLDS that came with the

If you don't play the game, then download the dedicated server ...

Reason being, if you play the game, and set up the downloadable dedicated
server, at patch time, you will have to download patches for all the
different versions ... If you play the game, you simply have to download
the client patches, and also apply them to the machine you're running as
your server ...  The client and server will be exactly the same, but the
server you will implement to serve, and the client you will implement to
play ...

I have been doing it this way for years ... originally I ran a HalfLife
server ... (the original game) and switched to CS sometime in April of this
year ...

If you want to run the dedicated 4108 server, you only need download the
full 1108 CS mod ...
