James, As for VAC1 just fading away, well thats kinda the point. It hasnt done a 'great' job at all, its done an "ok" job at best IMO. In case you are not aware, or have not noticed in-game, there are plenty of "working cheats" available online. Also, thats just the nature of software, it goes out of date pretty fast in many cases. Given the nature of cheating and since it is an on-going battle, this is certainly one of those cases. Sadly, anti-cheats will seemingly always be 2 steps behind the cheats.
Updates to VAC1? Well I would bet that wont happen, too much wasted time and effort. I would think they've done just about all the updating they are going to do, with VAC2 supposedly so close to release. Also, they may have already done this, as was pointed out there were many people saying that VAC2 banned them on the steam forums. That could have been a new cheat detection... I'm sure HL1 and mods will still get attention, if not by valve by someone. However, you can bet as HL2 mods come out, new games, etc that will start to fade away fast. HL1 has had a damn good run, have to give credit there. However, soon the only reason to keep playing HL1/mods will either be A) Nostalgia, B) Crappy Computer, or C) Don't want to shell out the cash for another game. Either way, that group is going to get so small after a while, nobody cares about updates for it. Ask anyone who plays a small MOD, getting updates is usually like pulling teeth. Basically put yourself in the shoes of the programmer who will be doing those updates. Should I spend time on something a handful of people play (relatively) or something that hundreds of thousands of people will play/use. Hmmm :) As to the content server question, no bloody idea. Good question though, I have had similar problems to those stated here, but at times when the content servers should have been near empty. (i.e. not after a release of any kind, just setting up a server) -The Joint Chief AKA Stoned Smurf -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dont forget to add the "Secure (Valve Anti-Cheat) tickbox in the dedicated server GUI. By the way, I think VAC1 shouldnt just fade out of existance. I mean it has done a good job. I think it should go out in style. Give it a nice update a week or so before HL1 is updated to disable it to make way for VAC2. It shouldnt just be chucked aside as if it never existed. You watch all the cheatsite forums start screaming "VAC2 IS RELEASED OMG IM BANNED" yet its just VAC1 going out with a bang. Then they start making updated cheats and say its "VAC2 PROOF" then VAC2 comes along and nabs em. Also, will there still be bugfixes and additions to HL1 + official mods, or is support like this over? Just received the e-mail regarding updating problems and I have a question about this too. How does steam and/or the update tool select what content server to use? I ask this because alot of times I will restart steam and I will be on a content server which is almost max'd out and I get a poor download speed, yet there are so many unfiltered content servers which I could be using but will not goto. -James _______________________________________________ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlds
