Does anyone remember actually WHEN this stopped working? I remember it
getting mentioned on here, and assumed it was a planned thing...

I've been mailed off list there by valve, suggesting that it wasn't planned,
perhaps an approximate date might help Valve figure out where it went wrong.

I have a machine with mails going back to 2004 on this list still I think,
I'll check that tomorrow.
