Coming from a Quake background I have never understood this.

You're comparing to *totally* different games. One is a game of full-on deathmatch mayhem with aliens and laser guns and magical teleportation devices and lava... CS is a tactical, squad-based shooter that, while obviously not 100% realistic, at least has it's *base* in reality.

Maps are designed with player running speeds in mind. When someone
finds a way to exploit the game engine to give them an incredible--and
highly unrealistic--speed advantage, it drastically changes the dynamics
of the game in an entirely selfish, unsporting manner. In the case of
strafe-jumping in CS, it had a significant negative impact on gameplay.
In the case of Quake, on the other hand, there wasn't nearly the same
sort of change, and it fit in with the overall theme and structure of
the game.

I just wish Valve would actually *fix* the problem in the engine instead
of adding code to make any jump screw up your ability to move at a
normal rate, which also changes the dynamics of the game. Remember the
mid apartments in cs_italy? As a CT, you could usually make it past
that first big room with the table before running head-long into a T.
Now, however, since you have to jump up a series of boxes to get into
the window, it's completely different. This is just an example, but you
get the idea.

This is an old argument that's been rehashed over and over. In the end,
it's up to the community in general--and the individual server admin
specifically. Deliberately exploiting bugs in a game to give yourself
an advantage that disrupts and degrades gameplay is not OK in my
not-so-humble opinion. I'd be curious to know where you draw the line
yourself. *ANYBODY* can download and install a wallhack, for instance.
Isn't that just another tool available to you to make you a better
player than the next guy?

The bottom line is that it's entirely unethical. Play on a level
playing field--which includes such config "tweaks" as ex_interp--with
the next guy, and you'll actually get to see who's a better a player.

I believe I adequately addressed that in the first couple of paragraphs,
so I won't go into it again here.
