Your servers weren't very good. That's the quick answer. I mean, if
they were full 24/7 for many months, and they're a ghost town all of a
sudden as soon as newer, better servers are on the list, you didn't have
much--if any--semblance of a community.

This assumes better servers are on the list. The way the list is sorted now has been plainly talked about and how you got "it sorts better servers first now" I have no idea. Because that's what happened here, what servers get listed first, nothing else. You mention community. How many server communities do you know of that have *so many* regulars it's enough to keep a server mostly full even half the time? You have to be more than "not very good" to achieve that, you need to be an elite. Now if this was your experience when you ran servers then good for you. You're out of touch with how bottom 98% works though.

I'm not whining. The same amount of players play now that did before.
It's just they are getting a different list than they once were. Most
players probably have never even noticed. It's us server admins that do
though and I knew something was up right away when a server I have was
close to full for over a year suddenly was empty for 6 hours the day
this change was made. I realized how many passers by I got after the
new sorting method was realized and discussed on this list.

And it doesn't help that so many people run servers (player/server ratio
in CS is wacked). It pollutes the list really but nothing can be done
about it. My servers sit empty more than populated now and I only keep
them up because of the regulars really wanting me to keep them up. But
that will die out eventually and I won't aid in the polluting of the
server list after that.
