After having read the interview, I have to say that although my wording
would be different, I do agree with the majority of the things these
gentlemen are saying. To put it short, delivering non-optional ads via
CS servers, would be similar to Apache being distributed with
non-optional ads on the websites you created and host through it,
without any revenue to you: Completely ridiculous!
I understand that Valve wants to explore ingame advertisement options.
Personally I am not even against it.. A while ago I have even inquired
about possibilities regarding this myself.
My (or I guess in this case 'our') problem with this, is the way it is
done.. If you ask me, there are better ways to do this, that are
beneficial to all parties.
For instance, what comes to mind would be a google adwords'ish OPTIONAL
advertisement program, for which server owners/operators/GSP's/etc.
could sign up and participate in.
That way everybody wins; Valve by gaining revenue from the advertisers.
The server owner by gaining revenues from Valve. The players, because
there would be more funding with the server owners, to fund bigger and
better servers for them to play on. And again Valve, because these
players would have a good playing-experience and recommend their friends
to buy the games.
Of course there will be those who will completely reject the principle
of ingame advertisements altogether, but that is a different discussion,
that I do not intend to have. ;-)
