My bad, ESXi is indeed paravirtualized, but not still as fast as Xen. 
You can test the disk i/o troughput just with dd, for example:

r...@srcds-1:/root# dd if=/dev/zero of=/root/test.img bs=1M count=4096
4096+0 records in
4096+0 records out
4294967296 bytes (4.3 GB) copied, 21.5771 s, 199 MB/s

Gives me a hell of more disk speed than ESXi. In ESXi it was about 60MB/s.

Dont know how ESXi paravirtualization is done, but Xen is a lot of faster.
