Hi Chris, It is logging that causes the issue. I do not run any plugins or mods on my vanilla L4D servers, and the only thing that causes them to crash is logging. To Crazy Canucks, all files and folders are owned by the same user, and the permissions are not changed from the time they are created by hldsupdatetool/steam :)
