to me, the client side fixes seem to be possible Source Engine related fixes. Perhaps because of the Mac and Linux versions...maybe they needed to update the engine to do Unicode or even Mac Roman strings instead of just plain ANSI.
Either way, if the Source Engine was "fixed" then other Source based games will also get updated.
