I can see most / many of these excuses applying to clients too. "I didn't know...my brother did it....I downloaded this program from the internetz"
In fact, a fair number of client cheaters and banned SPUF posters are hapless buffoons, barely out of short trousers. So I don't believe Valve is practising compassion (they put a Texan in charge of running the forums after all)
