Extremely short sighted vision there.

The internet basicly ran of ad income.

Servers and services have to be funded one way or another. The same is when you 
watch TV, you'll get ads thrown in your face. Displaying ads in a MOTD is much 
less instrusive. Say you get 1 ad served every 30-45 minutes at map change 
compared to the amount of ads served on TV, newspapers etc etc.

As long as ads are not extremely instrusive and put infront of your face every 
other minute there is nothing wrong with it.

Not everyone runs a community where their members apparently seem to have a 
unlimited cashflow coming in.
Sometimes you need a bit of extra money to be able to innovate and grow.

Running a server to try and make money is a weird prospect to me.

If you meant to ask how to pay for server costs then: get a job, or
build a community where your players don't mind helping to contribute.
