I know that this wasn't the intent of this thread but it gets a little
annoying that every time is comes up we have an idiot who goes "Ads are
gross and you know what I don't care how servers try and survive, they
should just remove all perks and ads and die." I mean literally that is
what I swear they think, and they just need to simply think about it for
a minute and they should realize "Hey, they are doing this to pay for
the server and therefore this keeps up the server." but NO, they go
"WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA Ads."

Even then, I would posit that the MOTD window was not designed for nor
is ideal serving ads. Its for the message of the day. Ads have just
been shoehorned in there because no one has thought of a better approach.
If they are intrusive report them or leave. There are tons of servers,
currently gametracker states about 9K.
Running a server to try and make money is a weird prospect to me.
If you meant to ask how to pay for server costs then: get a job, or
build a community where your players don't mind helping to contribute.
I already have a job, but I was looking for something else in your
statement. To pay for the servers like the idiot below wants you need to
give out perks. Most communities don't just have a donate box and give
nothing out in return. So a Ad once every time you join and during map
changes is excessive? How about nighteam's perks.
