Thanks for the useful information. Cold booting seemed to have undone whatever i had mistakenly created, but i am thinking of trying sygate instead anyway.
 
(I guess that should make me wonder how secure a fire wall really is, if merely shutting down the computer can undo security settings? Hmmm?)
 
Have not been able to replicate the situation that prompted me to create the rule in the first place, but i should have known better than to hit "deny" instead of "allow." Sometimes our paranoia gets the better of us.
