There are a number of fine and comprehensive books published on the history
of the horn. Encylopaedia Britannica has only a brief introduction to the
subject. Groves Dictionary of Music and Musicians, 2000 edition has a much
better coverage. Independant publications include: 1. The Horn by Robin
Gragory 1961, Faber and Faber; 2. The French Horn by R. Morley-Pegge, 1960,
Ernst Benn, London: 3 The French Horn by Barry Tuckwell, 1983 Maxwell
House, London. 4. The horn and Horn Playing by Horace Fitzpatrick, 1970,
Oxford University Prass 5, A pictorial history of the Horn by Bruchle and
Janetzky, 1976 Schneider, Tutzing, Germany: 6. The Early Horn, A Practical
Guide,by John Humphries, Cambridge University Press. And don't forget A
Devil to Play by Jasper Rees, 2008, Harper Collins. Humorous and
entertaining.
