As I read it, we're talking reinforcement, not recording - two different 
animals.

Another vote for "play the dynamics".  As much as possible, everyone in 
the pit should strive to create the proper balance/dynamics/etc.  
acoustically and ignore the mics.  Both you and the engineer will be 
happier.
