> Should I play dynamics or is that taken out of my hands by an engineer?
As everybody else suggested, play dynamics. In some cases, though, the dynamic range of a horn is too much for close-miking to handle unless the engineer is constantly riding the fader or compressing you. So you might want to avoid extremely loud dynamics if the close mic is indeed what they are primarily using for horn sound (it may not be, as others pointed out). The other side of that coin is that if the part is extremely tiring, you can take it a little easier and let the sound guys just bump the volume a bit, unless the part really calls for brassy timbre. You should assume that the engineers are competent until proven incompetent :-) The most important thing is to be consistent with the volume you are putting out and the location of the horn relative to the mic. If they do botch the job, only then you should take measures into your own hands to ensure the audience experience is as good as possible.
