I saw 2 movements of this performance and you can see a black mute in the bell while holding the lower rim of the horn. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2CxP-DufkU at 1:06 and 1:54 you can see hands in the bell as per usual. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8PSvyBybEHs at 0:46 and especially at 2:00 you can see a black mute in the bell of Radek Baborak's horn and he is holding the lower rim. No need for any goofy theories.
