I saw 2 movements of this performance and you can see a black mute in the
bell while holding the lower rim of the horn.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2CxP-DufkU at 1:06 and 1:54 you can see
hands in the bell as per usual.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8PSvyBybEHs at 0:46 and especially at 2:00
you can see a black mute in the bell of Radek Baborak's horn and he is
holding the lower rim.
No need for any goofy theories.

Subject: [Hornlist] The right hand in/on the bell?

<surprised to see the first horn playing with his hand
out of the bell holding the lower rim. . . .What could be the justification
for this? Anyone have an idea?>

Since they were outdoors, maybe it was cool, he was playing flat & found
taking the hand out the bell was the best way to bring up the pitch????
