That is not helpful. If you don't have anything to add, don't add it.

If you do have something to add, then add it.

But telling someone that they can come up with the answer on their own is
equivalent to not having anything to add.

William,

Not at all.

I never said anything like" because I said so."

I figured that you seemed like an intelligent guy, and that if you put
some time into thinking about what you had said, that you would
probably come a different understanding on your own.

One thing I should have written, is that all players face this
evaluation every time they play- not just professionals.

So in other words, instead of being constructed, you choose to say

"Because I said so".

If I didn't want to learn I wouldn't have asked 'how'.

That's why I said... how...

 How? Care to elaborate?

-William

William,

In answer to your question "How?",
I seriously wonder whether you are interested in just arguing your
point or wanting to learn?

If your purpose is to learn, I suggest that you reread your original
statement, put some serious thought into it within the context of
performing daily ( in a way, actually auditioning daily) for your
audience, your colleagues, and your conductors, and I would hope that
you would come to an answer to your question "How?" on your own.

William wrote

"Granted, in real jobs you don't have to re-apply for your own position
- but you do have to face re-evaluations every now and then. "

This statement above indicates a stunning level of naivete about
professional performance.
