I'd like to change the subject slightly, mostly because this seems to have become the thread that will never die, but some because ... My son, a 17-year-old high school junior, used to double on French Horn (studying with esteemed list member Chris Wilhjelm and playing wonderfully while he did so - Chris, I'm do for a lesson soon) and trumpet. When my son started high school, he decided to focus on trumpet, but every once in a while, you see him look wistfully over at the French Horn section, or hear him after a concert talking about how beautiful the French Horn parts are in certain pieces and wondering if he made the right decision. David (my son) has been fortunate to play with, since February, the New York Youth Symphony - as a trumpeter. We should also add that David has had the good fortune to study trumpet these last three years with Vince Penzarella - it's a match that's worked out fantastically for David and his playing has improved by leaps and bounds, and continues to do so. Yesterday, NYYS' concert featured Strauss' Ein Heldenleben - oh, my G-d, what wonderful horn writing and lots of it, too! I must confess that this is the first time I've listened to Heldenleben from beginning to end - what a wonderful - and tiring - experience it must be to play that on the French Horn. My connection to this amateur horn section thread is that this was, indeed, an amateur horn section, admittedly a pre-professional one chosen by audition. All the players are 22 years of age or younger and are not paid - and a very, very good section, indeed. Nine horn players on the stage yesterday. If any of you know people in the metro NYC area who are looking for inexpensive concerts to attend here, the tickets are only $15 apiece for the entire hall, and it's some damned fine playing, and in one of the world's legendary concert halls, too. That's it for me - I will practice with extra fervor today after hearing all that wonderful horn playing yesterday. -S- _______________________________________________ post: [email protected] unsubscribe or set options at https://pegasus.memphis.edu/cgi-bin/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org
