Hans,

Apropos the echo horn effect, I was taught to produce it by partially
stopping the horn---that is, closing off the bell about 7/8 with the
hand so that it lowers the pitch a half-step---and fingering the passage
(such as in Dukas' Sorcerer's Apprentice) a half-step higher. It works
for me and is simple, but is the use of a cloth ball the time-honored
tradition? It would certainly eliminate the need for transposing.

Or is it another example of "whatever works, do it"?
