Richard, what you describe, is just the "gedaempft" Effect (or muted, hand 
muted). It allows a similar effect (near) as the "echo-ball".

This, also half-muted named technique is the more important technique than 
stopped, if we talk about the natural horn technique. Using the higher natural 
pitch & tune it down a half step, or a quarter step or even less (7th Bb, 11th 
f2, a1) or more in the lower region. Stopping is just required for very few 
notes, but mostly in combination with a sf or fz or sfz .
