One year at music camp, my buddy and I both had braces. His father was a
dentist and gave him lidocaine gel--presumably for use AFTER playing to ease
the discomfort. We decided to use it DURING rehearsals and concerts. At least
the braces didn't hurt! Boy, did we tear up our lips that summer. It took a
good long time for the hamburger to resemble lips again after that. :-)
