I also had tinnitus for many years. It sounded like I was standing next to the freeway all the time and contributed to troubles understanding speech. I finally realized (along with some testing) that significant hearing had been lost in my left ear, which was attributed to otosclerosis. This was treated with a stapedectomy, however, which returned most hearing and drastically changed the nature of the tinnitus. It's now much less noticeable and more similar to the "15Khz flyback transformer" description.
As an aside... one of the weird (temporary) complications of the recovery from the stapedectomy, was a condition called "diplacusis"... hearing pitches differently in each ear. I laid off horn playing for a while, but went back to hand bell playing almost immediately. Quite disconcerting to ring a bell and always hear a minor second (or worse) as a result :-) Warren Van Camp _______________________________________________ post: [email protected] unsubscribe or set options at https://pegasus.memphis.edu/cgi-bin/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org
