Hi Martin, I know it doesn't come across in emails, but I was actually joking - I know how hard, and how sad it is, to have problems like this, especially if the chap in question is a good player and nice chap with it.
I'm sure that often these people don't know the effect their "dancing" is having on other players and sometimes simply need to told. Patronising bit: I would do it by joking first, making the odd daft comment here and there to draw his attention to the fact that it's been noticed, then, if that didn't work, very quietly and privately ask if, for that one piece where I had a solo, he could try not to upset me. Then go back to a joke about how much easer it was with only one conductor maybe? I'm sure you've tried all this and I'm just sounding patronising - sorry. I don't know the setup, but I sympathise. If nothing works, you could always try something less subtle - take a washing line to the rehearsal and tie him to his chair - maybe that'll make the point.
