For certain details, nothing beats an on-the-ground survey; most of the TIGER data is in effect a survey from various US Census employees over the years if I remember right. It brought us a long way but had to be cleaned up extensively and there is still plenty of "TIGER barf" out there in rural areas. However, for basic road layout, building positions, and sometimes traffic controls (signs and signals leave shadows, if the image quality is good enough), satellite photos come in very handy, though you will never get things like names from that. It is *sometimes* possible to discern certain brands (McDonald's, Chick-Fil-A, Home Depot, Walmart) from just the satellite imagery but this can be very hit-or-miss. I don't mind good quality imports, but I'm still cleaning up churches here in Houston from some import done years ago, many of which are over a mile away from where they should be. -- Shawn K.
