Eric:

I'd like to chime in here too. I've been making photographic prints
since the late 1950's, and although I don't claim to be a color
management expert, I have seen a lot of prints. In the several
months I've been printing on my HP 130 using the HP supplied
profiles, I've been nothing but satisfied.

I use a calibrated monitor and my prints are darned close to what I
see on the screen. Certainly not far enough off to justify custom
profiles for use with the HP papers.

Like you, I've noticed a certain amount of grumbling about the HP
profiles, but I find it interesting that in almost every case, the
grumbler is either someone selling profiles or someone who's spent
money on them.

I can certainly afford to buy profiles, but until I notice some
color inaccuracy problems or until one of my clients complains about
the color they're seeing (and paying for) I think I'll invest my
money in a nice old sipping Rum.
