Don't know what quality setting was used on the Z3100 driver but at the maximum quality it has a 1200 x 1200 PPI native (rendering) resolution. The Epsons have a maximum 720 x 720 native resolution. That gives a 2.77 x difference in data size. Whether one needs that resolution is another matter, there's no need for it on HM Photorag. If you drop to 600 x 600 PPI native resolution the ratio is 0,7 to the 720 PPI of the Epsons, at 300 x 300 PPI it is 0.7 to the 360 PPI of the Epsons. I have no proof of the following but I think that the extrapolating routines of the Z3100 driver are a lot closer to the Qimage routines than what has been usual in printer drivers so far. In Qimage the better routines also produce larger printer data files that take more time in processing too. In the combination of Qimage + the Z3100 driver there is no extra time lost as Qimage delivers the native resolution to the driver, either Qimage or the driver has to do the job. It will be time consuming but measuring time on several quality settings in the Z3100 and the Epson 9800 for the same image, with and without Qimage, will show some relations to what I wrote above. Data file size kept in the driver spoolers will add to that. On page 166 of the Z3100 manual the resolutions <> quality settings are described. More important right now is to find out what max. quality is needed on several papers. Qimage's test patterns should tell. Too much time wasted in the highest quality settings that exceed the maximum quality possible on the paper coating. A luxury problem.
