Well you know HP, Canon, and even Epson have spent so much time optimising their set ups for glossy media that I'll bet your right that the added resolution is not necessary for matte rag papers at all. But you would have to test it.
For some of us this could be a significant issue when you say have several 44"x60" prints in a row to do. Half the spooling time could be huge. But like Amadou suggests, different rips will function differently,with pros and cons of each. John > More important right now is to find out what max. quality is > needed on several papers.
