Hi Laura, On the 5000 [non PS], when you send a job to print, you are using the windows driver which has an input of RGB. Meaning, the data being sent to the driver, to be converted to printer data needs to be in an RGB colorspace. If it is not, it is first converted to this color space. It is then converted to the device colorspace which is a CMYK colorspace.
When they talk about the PS version, you can choose there to use the normal Windows driver or the Postscript driver. Using the postscript driver, you can send a job which has its colors defined in a CMYK colorspace and in the color management options of the driver, you can choose to emulate one of the offset presses. So yes, all the printers do convert the data to CMYK, but it's not a CMYK profile like SWAP or Euroscale, but in the end it is the device's cmyk colorspace. Indeed, as late as possible. But this is done inside the printer, using it's internal color calibrations etc. If however, you are using a RIP that bypasses these calibrations, that is then a different story. So yes, you can send an rgb profiled job to the printer and using the right input and output profile choices, in combination with the right rendering intent, you should get the colors you are looking for.
