Problem with the printheads are they regularly require calibration. Sometimes they degrade so much that you need to change a head even when they look ok in a quality diagnostic print. A very small deviation in especially the LM or LC heads will cause problems with monochrome printing, less so with full color.
A RIP will definitely help in achieving optimal monochrome output for these printers. You may want to try to perform a color calibration using the same media which you used initially to achieve the good quality you got with Hahnemuhle.
