Sounds a bit like you've discovered a memory leak. What version of
ht://Dig are you using? If it's a 3.1.x release, is this happening when
running htmerge? (If so, it's because the sort program consumes an immense
amount of memory. You might try 3.2.0b3.)

What OS are you using? Keep in mind that on some systems, /tmp is
essentially the swap space, so putting files in there will consume swap.

Not really--we'd have to put in our own memory management code to swap
things to disk and I'd guarantee that the OS'es code would be much
better. But it sounds like you're seeing something unusual. How big is
this site roughly? (e.g. # of pages?)
