You didn't answer my question about whether the memory problems shoot 
up when running htdig or htmerge. If it's the latter, then you might 
try 3.2.0b3. If it's the former, then there's some other problem.

This is still well within the limits of 256MB! Last time I checked, 
the wso.williams.edu server was indexing around 100,000 pages inside 
128MB. So I'm quite surprised you're seeing so much memory used, 
unless it's from htmerge sorting the words.
