I am using 3.2.0-b2 that ships with RH 7.3 (*really old* and somewhat
buggy from what Gilles has said).
In my htdig.conf:
template_map: \
Long long /home/apache/htdig/templates/long_result.html \
Short short /home/apache/htdig/templates/short_result.html
template_name: long
In long_result.html:
<dl>
<dt>
<strong><a href="$&(URL)">$&(TITLE)</a></strong>$(STARSLEFT)
