To start with your ending question: I have no idea.

To try something else: Use the panomatic plugin for a change.

And last: Please share your images and .pto with us.
If they are really big, resize them, try them again and if the problem
persists upload this smaller set to some place where we can download them.
Just upload it to one of the free file-sharing websites. For example:
