  I can't argue with that, but I still want 'em ;-)  I agree it's inconvenient
that there are sooo many distributions in unix-land.  How 'bout if you rely on
civic-minded volunteers to build the packages for you?

  Has anyone tried putting together a package that consists of source that unpacks
itself, configures itself via autoconf, compiles itself, installs itself into a
standard location, and then removes the source.  All defaults could of course be
overridden.  It's be kinda fun to watch, dontcha think?
