I live 22 miles south of Washington, DC, in Woodbridge, Virginia.
About 18 months ago I started hearing what sounded like a truck motor
idling down the street, or perhaps a neighbor playing music that
contained a lot of bass. The sound would normally be heard late at
night and into the early morning.

After a couple weeks of this, I was annoyed enough to start
researching the source in earnest. I'm not too far from a major
highway (I-95) and there was a concrete plant and a marina near my
home. I noticed that the sound would change in terms of volume based
on what room of the house I was in. I could only hear the sound when
in my home. As soon as I stepped outside, it would become
indistinguishable from the background noise of the street.

A couple months went by and I made no progress locating the source.
After doing some online research I finally came across a web site that
contained information on "the hum". I was shocked...what an unusual
occurrence for so many around the world to be experiencing! It was
around that time I also realized I could hear the sound from my
Mother's home, which was about 5 miles away.

Two weeks ago I moved into a new home 6 miles south of my previous
rental where I began hearing the hum a year and a half a ago. After
being here a couple days, I realized I can still hear the hum clear as
day. When I started writing this a few minutes ago, the hum was quite
discernible, and then it abruptly stopped.

I found this discussion group via the John Dawes web site; how many of
you are familiar with his theories surrounding the source of the hum?

It's nice to meet others who are affected by this.
