Your story is very familiar.  I began noticing the sound about 6
months ago (Central Texas).  It does indeed sound like a diesel motor
idling, and at times changes an octave up and down.  I have spent
hours trying to locate the sound; listened to the walls, floor, turned
off everything electrical in the house.  It's everywhere, but it's
nowhere.  Louder inside than out. I hear it at home and at work.   My
family thinks I'm crazy because they don't hear it.
I don't CARE what it is necessarily, but would like to know WHAT it
is.
