Jim,
It depends on what key the HG was built to play in. Mine has an F# in
the row of natural keys where the F should be, so the keys are e f# g
a b c d e' f#' g' a' b' c' etc. My F natural is in the top row of
keys, which are all flats and sharps. Since I mostly play in the keys
of D major, G major, and E minor (great keys for medieval music), this
makes sense because I use the F# a lot in medieval songs. Other HGs
may have different layouts depending on what music it will be used
for. When I need an F natural I need to reach up to the row of sharps
and flats, but this doesn't happen very often with my music. I'm sure
that other HG's have a different layout. Of course, you can always
change the key pitches around by twisting the tangents on the keys,
but this doesn't work very well if you twist them too far because the
added leverage can cause them to move too much when they hit the
string. My tangents tend to stay put the straighter they are, although
I am always moving them a little to tune (I use an authentic medieval
electronic tuner).
