I´ve seen Ritchie Blackmore (deep purple - rainbow - blackmore´s night) play
the hurdy gurdy on several occasions. Even though he does not excel at it,
his playing does a fine job in blackmore´s night.

I think he uses a Helmut Gotschy´s phoenix hurdy gurdy.
