You two are dogs, and I'm no longer speaking to either of you!! (just 
kidding,  of course)
 
The quick answer, which I am sure you will hear from the entire listserve  
in unison, is overhead...absolutely not checked baggage.

My wife  is presently in France, and her sister's husband has lent her 
the HG he'd  bought for his sons, which they have not the slightest 
interest in.   She's planning to try to bring it home this next week, 
hence the  question.  How did you bring yours to OTW last year?  As 
checked  baggage, or carry-on?  Was there any sort of problem with doing  
that?  She'll be flying Air France and invariably brings back a  whacking 
great haul of flea-market swag for her antiques/collectibles  business, 
but it always flies as checked baggage and she really doesn't  much care 
what happens to it.  This is different ...
