If the instrument in its case is too large, the case can go to checked  
baggage (full of nickknacks in Claudie's case, no doubt) and wrap the 
instrument  in coats or blankets for protection in overhead. Obviously best if 
it 
keeps its  case.
 
She needs to be prepared to plead, cry, threaten lawsuits, cry more,  
whatever it takes to keep it out of checked baggage. 
 
Actually Cali and Alden have a detailed piece on how to fly with a gurdy  
somewhere on the website, if I remember right.
