Claudie's visiting France, and you're getting a French made hurdy-gurdy. You two are dogs, and I'm no longer speaking to either of you!! (just kidding, of course)

I omitted a major part of the story -- SHE's getting the HG! There will now be two old cranks in our family too! And no, she's not abandoning the button-box, but just branching out.

The quick answer, which I am sure you will hear from the entire listserve in unison, is overhead...absolutely not checked baggage.

Can that still be done?

Well, it looks like we're about to have a new addition to our
family. My wife is presently in France, and her sister's husband has lent her
the HG he'd bought for his sons, which they have not the slightest
interest in. She's planning to try to bring it home this next week,
hence the question. How did you bring yours to OTW last year? As
checked baggage, or carry-on? Was there any sort of problem with
    doing
that? She'll be flying Air France and invariably brings back a
    whacking
great haul of flea-market swag for her antiques/collectibles
    business,
but it always flies as checked baggage and she really doesn't much
    care
what happens to it. This is different ...
