Thanks Alden and Paul, for your suggestions. Alden's was the one I'd heard before, possibly from him, but in the fashion of French lutebacks the bridge is sturdily tied to the tailpiece and the tangent pattern on the second chanterelle is, if anything, tending toward the opposite. So following Paul's suggestion I tried lightening the cotton yet further, and found a new non-screechy configuration which changed the tuning utterly. Now I'll move the nut back toward the bridge and see how the tangents look when they're tuned.
