probably its all mainly a question of description. I would describe the position of the first stroke as 'about half past one' but depending on the geometry of player plus instrument. In more technical terms

The first stroke is the a passive (gravitation driven) vertical movement, starting at the point where axis is not blocking this movement anymore. The knob contacts the hand at the thumb, muscular action is the relaxation of the bizeps. Direction is down. Its a privileged point as it utilizes gravitational acceleration.

Details: If you hold the and rest your Hand with the full weight on the knob right in top position, there is a point about vertically above the axis where the axis is blocking any falling movement. Somewhere past 12.00 here is he point where te hand and arm can fall down freely passing the axis downwards. This point is pos 1. Its usually somewhere around 13.00 to 14.00 by the clock, depending on the geometry of Player plus instrument and on the drag of the strings. Especially with small persons and big instruments it can be 'earlier' even bevore 12.00.

so, thats my opinion and my choisse of thechnique. Maybe this contributes to the understanding of different descriptions of the pos 1.

kind regards, Simon
