That said, you should be able to START a tune in any position
(1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,8 3/4 e.g. pick-up note) as long as the timing
remains the same as those around you and that the 1 remains at the
top when all around you play 1 from the top/down.
to clearify and make sure we are talking the same:
at first hand the positions I am talking about are not the positions
of the *time* in the bar, but positions of the *hand* (i.e. names of
the coup).
speaking of c.4 (coup de quatre), in 2/4 pos.1 is also on the beats in
the music, aka the beats 1 and the 2 in a 2/4.
In usual 3/4 and 6/8 its pos. 1 for the beat 1 of the 1st and 3rd
bars (in 3/4 also beat 3 of the 1st bar and beat 2 of the 2nd bar)
in 5/8 its beat 1 only with the 1st and 5th bars,...
the reason of this synchronisation between the position of the hand
and the main beats of the bars is that the beats done from pos.1 can
easily get some extra punch as needed for a strong 1st beat.
But a good player can also play any beat from any position, in several
techniques, fo example play a 2/4 rhythm in coup de 3.
Given that pretty much every one I know plays the French style
(Maxou, Bouffard, Chabenat, Jolivet, Wascher (yes I know he's
German, or are you Austrian, Simon?)
Austrian :-)
