I think we must also take into account that those on the list share one thing. We love the HG. That encompasses those who build, those who play and those who have just an interest in the instrument.
All three will have those of varying experience and interests.
I joined the list without ever having seen a gurdy being played and had only heard one on a radio program which captivated me (although I play many other instruments). I learned much about them here and when I managed to get a reasonably priced model from Helmut Seibert I was delighted that it was actually in tune and playable right out of the box. I even managed a few trompettes as well. Of course, then I had to find out how to cotton and all the other twiddles the instrument constantly needs. It must have driven half the list mad with the inane things I was asking (really basic stuff). I'm sure there are prospective builders who, with a good deal of woodworking skills, find themselves in a similar "basic" position whether they have the latest tools or a scrap of flint to start work with. There are many threads which are simply well above my skill/experience which I still read to gain more knowledge of the instrument. Now, the point is, we are a mixed community and I am quite happy for a few dozen emails to come through which really are beyond me or which I don't understand. I have the choice of marking them as read or deleting them at the touch of a button. To restrict the list to certain aspects of the HG would, in my mind, be like ripping out pages of am encyclopaedia because they weren't of particular interest at the time.
I think the thing to do is to pay particular attention to the subject line.
Yes, there will be many instruments made which are not going to sound that nice for various reasons but, one hopes, a new builder would seek out a working model for comparison (or just listen to a CD or Youtube clip) to hear what is expected. That being said, one only has to watch the X factor to see and hear that some people are incapable of that. The poor playing of any instrument is par for the course whether it be learning the violin or an oboe. I've heard some pretty dire sounds at school concerts. There's is (in my opinion) plenty of room here for all aspects of HG related items and I think it would be a great shame to split things into various forums. True, it could become a clique list with room only for experienced or professional players but that would be a shame. This isn't a reply to this particular tongue-in-cheek mail by the way but just to the subject generally as, being an amateur player (which I consider myself to be) I want to learn from the rest of you and not feel I'm not good enough to be on the list.

Dear list,

didn't someone propose tho discuss this topic on a special luthier list ?

I do not want to offend anybody. In the past 35 years a lot of
qualified instrument makers worked hard to develop modern instruments
that really SOUND like a "real instrument" I hate the idea of some
enthusiastic amateurs proudly presenting their newly tinkered gurdy
with a horrible sound…

Well said! No offence taken. The idea of all those amateur players
banging out screechy old tunes and annoying everyone is anathema to
*real* musicians with*real* instruments even if they are just carrying
on a thousand year old folk tradition and enjoying themselves to boot.
What right do they think they have spoiling it for real musicians? I
think I must go and destroy my home made gurdy and perhaps even enter a
monastry and do penance. What on earth was I thinking?

Well done! You have have redefined snobbery for me. This is exactly the
attitude that has raised such ire in many beginners.
