I'm fairly new to HG playing, but have used just intonation for many years for
other purposes - since my tuner supported JI I decided to use it last time I
tuned the tangents, and was very happy with the result. When played against a
drone the pure intervals really pop!--Norm

Re: [HG-new] Equal Temperament Tuning and Intonation

Once you’ve gotten on to the sound of just intonation (or even variety of
meantone), it’s hard to accept equal temp as being in tune. Those pure thirds
and truly perfect intervals of just intonation are really pretty. But—ensemble
work does require some compromise, unfortunately.

2 cents on tuning,

I've tuned my instrument very carefully to equal temperament for ensemble work,
but it never stays there long. I'll tweak it to make it sound right on a
regular basis. I don't know that its Just Intonation, however, as I don't use a
tuner or check. But it certainly isn't equal temperament since the dominant is
out and, when you're used to the sound, equal temperament sounds really strange
compared to the pure fifth you expect there.

I find it useful, however, to use a tuner and aim for equal temperament as a
first step and then tweak things from there. It gets you close enough as a
starting point.

Hiya,

I find myself wondering how many gurdy players tweak their tangents between
Equal Temperament and Just Intonation?

Players I've talked to who play in bands all seem to favor the Equal
Temperament, but the soloists usually tell me they just tweak the tangents
"until they sound right". Since the soloists seem to have been playing mostly
diatonic and modal folk tunes I assume they (knowingly or not) use a Just
Intonation.

So what's your opinion or technique for tuning the tangents?
