If you _don't_ tune equal tempermant (ET) and play with anything that is
(piano,
guitar, etc.) you'll really regret it. And add to the reputation of
hurdy-gurdy
always being out of tune.

As a solo instrument, it sounds best in a tempered tuning. Which one (there
are
many) depends on what music you want to play. Tuning to an ET tuner and then
"fixing" the intervals that have beats you don't like is a simple but
reasonably
effective approach.

For a somewhat more complex but still straightforward approach, see
http://orfeo-fiato.nl/hurdy_gurdy_tuning.html, the section in bright blue
highlight.

And for anyone that isn't quite sure what this "temperament" thing is, google
is
your friend. And a really interesting experimental tuner / exploration tool
for
Windows, called WinTemper. Free download at http://wintemper.com/

A terrific book on the topic is "How Equal Temperament Ruined Harmony (and why
you should care)",
